The Carmen Miranda Inspiration
From Painting to Jewelry
The year was 2016. The place: the iconic Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
MPorto Studio presented the exhibition Carmen Miranda – The Brazilian Bombshell, celebrating the legacy and visual exuberance of the legendary performer.
Among the works, the painting O Que É Que a Baiana Tem? — “What Is It That the Bahian Woman Has?” — drew inspiration from one of Carmen Miranda’s most famous songs. The composition explored the tropical elements that defined her iconic image: vibrant fruits, ornamental forms, and the rich cultural symbolism of the Baiana tradition.
From painting to design, one inspiration led to another. The artwork inspired the creation of sculptural earrings developed in collaboration with the jewelry brand Essere, translating the painting’s tropical forms into wearable design. The success of the piece led to the development of an entire tropical jewelry collection for the brand, extending the dialogue between art, fashion, and design inspired by Carmen Miranda’s vibrant spirit.
